Newel post

Newel post “Oak leaves in walnut“

A serious woodcarving connoisseur and collector, Bruce F. asked me to carve him a newel post for the staircase in his home’s front entry. After an exchange of emails, we settled on oak leaves as the primary decorative component.

“Oak leaves in walnut“ began as all my pieces do: with multiple sketches and a clay model. I used the clay model specifically to experiment with the positioning of the leaves, branches and acorns. I wanted to situate everything in just such a way, so that the life and natural beauty of the oak leaves shone through. Once everything was put in its place and approved by my client, I got to work!

I am happy to say Bruce was as pleased with the finished product as I was!

“Oak leaves in walnut“ is carved from a single block of American walnut. It measures 9 x 4.5 x 4.5 inches and is finished in Danish oil.
